I agree and disagree.

I think the important thing to note is that he says, “We don’t need your help,” so I don’t see this as an inversion of the previous “I need you”s. The other two times were Dean saying he needs Cas, not whatever help Cas can provide. In Dean’s mind, these are very distinctly different things; he made the mistake of treating Cas like he was only good inasmuch as he was useful in the past, and after all the terrible shit that went down Dean makes sure (in his terribly poorly communicated way) not to suggest such a thing again. Because it’s not true anymore — they really don’t need Cas’s help. If they keep Cas around, it’s because he’s family, period. Dean just needs the stupid angel to be there, and he’s tried so hard this season to make Cas understand that.

But does Cas understand it? Well, clearly not. Dean may not intend for “We don’t need your help” to be the opposite of “I need you,” but Cas still interprets it that way. And that’s the real tragedy here. Dean’s thinking, “I’ve made this clear multiple times, and every time you just leave.” He feels betrayed because he’s bared his soul for Cas and gotten nothing in return; he thinks, for once, that he’s made his point clear. But Cas, for his part, hasn’t gotten the message. Perhaps on some level he understands what Dean has been getting at, but he certainly hasn’t accepted it. He still thinks he has to do things to earn his place in the Winchesters’ lives — that, oh, but if I can just do this good thing for Dean, everything will be okay again. Hence the comically/tragically desperate shopping incident.

Basically, if this scene doesn’t sum up Dean and Cas’s problems this season, nothing does. Dean thinks he’s being clear; he’s telling Cas the other half of what he’s been saying all season: “We don’t need your help, but I need you.” And Cas, bless him, still thinks that he can make things better by being useful, by going out and doing good things until Dean forgives him. The irony is that it’s quite literally the opposite; if he’d just stay for once and stop trying to take action to get back into Dean’s good graces, he would be back in Dean’s good graces. Goddammit.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go cry and punch a wall because these two are such oblivious morons.

Because a part of Cas still equates “I need you” with “You’re useful to me”. And he just doesn’t understand, not on any *reasonable* level, that he is something *more* to Dean than a nifty swiss army knife. He tells Dean, “Let me go with you (because I can be useful)” and Dean tries to tell him “Stay and get better” but all Castiel hears is (so you can heal and be useful later). He doesn’t hear the “stay” part at all.

And it just makes me what to rip my hair out.

In late December of 2003, security cameras at Hampton Court Palace, a huge tudor castle near London, captured a startling image. Security guards were unsettled to repeatedly find a fire door open when no one was apparently around. Upon checking the security tape, they were shocked by a ghostly figure, closely resembling King Henry VIII (who died in the 1500s).

I’ve wanted to put this up for months now, but I don’t know how to even begin to explain it.

This is a picture that someone took of me standing on the top of a car park, seconds from ending my life. The person that took this uploaded it to twitter with the caption ‘tense moment…’ and it was put in the paper the next day.

It really bothered me that this person took this, but did nothing to stop me. The last thing I wanted at that moment was to be saved, I just wanted to be dead, gone forever, away from the pain. Despite this, it really hurt me that someone could take a picture of me literally seconds from being dead, and act like it was okay. Luckily I was talked down by a woman who then took me for a coffee and comforted me while I cried for hours, but this person just stood, watching, doing nothing.

When I saw this it made me think, does anyone actually care? This person uploaded a photo of someone about to commit suicide to the Internet, probably for attention and retweets. I don’t particularly care for myself or how I feel, but the fact this person was so heartless and didn’t even care to call the police or even a member of staff in the car park just makes me so angry. I don’t understand how you can watch someone doing this to themselves and not even blink an eye.

I don’t really know where I’m going with this, but I just want to say that whoever took this is selfish and has no soul, and I hope whoever they are feels fucking ashamed of themselves.

TIME’s new cover makes me so mad I could write essays about it, but instead I’m going to keep job hunting since in today’s world a university degree means nothing and therefore like much of my generation, I’m stuck choosing between minimum wage jobs and internships that I can’t afford to accept in an attempt to pay off my tens of thousands of dollars worth of student debt.

I’d be interested in reading this article to see exactly what makes us entitled and lazy. Are we lazy because more of us are completing high school and going to college than ever before? Are we entitled because our standard of living is declining? Do we live with our parents because we’re too slothful to leave or is because our education costs are getting steeper and steeper while we’re getting less and less aid?

Tell us, Time Magazine, about how we’re narcissistic little slugs when we’re faced with an economic crisis that resulted in a lowering of our standard of living, an increase in tuition costs and how when we get out of our very expensive schools, more and more of us are going to end up working minimum wage jobs.

I also want to note that it’s really frustrating that the face of “lazy, entitled narcissism” is a young woman.

There was another article a while ago like this, article or editorial I forget, from I think People Magazine that essentially criticized our generation for not being as material—renting when there was an option to buy, using the internet to get a lot of things for free/way cheaper than we would otherwise, and in some cases altogether, just deciding we don’t need things like cable tv when the internet exists and reading it was both surreal and frustrating because the criticism seemed to be “why aren’t you wasting money you don’t have like everyone else? Don’t know know that’s just the way life works?”

I was exceedingly, exceedingly lucky to graduate with my BA debt-free. I have remained debt-free since graduation, however, because I don’t spend money. And by that I mean in an economic sense, I don’t even factor in to anyone’s equation. I receive Federal Aid, which means I don’t count as part of the workforce, unemployed or not, because at current, I’m not even looking for a job. Current circumstances make it pointless.

There are thousand of people like me. But we are not lazy. We’re not even hopeless or washed out, we are simply in situations where being part of a traditional workforce is difficult to impossible. When articles like that say “lazy” what they really mean to say is “not contributing to the current work force model” and that’s because the current model sucks. Generally speaking it’s getting to a point where it costs more to have a job (either in commute cost, cost of living just to be near enough to a job to commute) than we are being paid at the jobs we have. I experienced this when I last worked, almost five years ago as a substitute aid at the local school district. As an aid I earned 8.50$ an hour for weeks that were sometimes as scarce as 6-10 hours a week. 4.20$ of that when to getting back and forth to work every day. So if I worked a 10 hour week, (in two hour shifts, spaced out over five days)— 21$ of the 85$ I earned (before taxes) would go to transportation alone. It was a good week when I broke even on paying for how much it cost to get me to work. The only reason I didn’t quit was because I desperately did not want that on my resume, I honestly enjoyed my job, and I was *ding ding ding* living at home. Just goes to show that you don’t need to be drowning in student debt to have this particular problem.

That’s what articles like this mean when they use the term “lazy.” ”Lazy” to them means we are refusing to accept something they have foisted on us as a reality when it’s something they have manufactured for us to line their pockets. So yes, my generation is “lazy” and we’re fucking proud of it.

These are good thoughts, although I don’t really count, as I’m more the vision of the wasteland these articles love to point at.

But what’s interesting to me is a lot of these issues aren’t even just hitting people from my generation and the younger ones, alone. I have heard my parents and siblings talk about so many people and seen so many others online far older who are in the same boat.

Though the media paints that as “the return of multi-generational homes” and instead heaps the blame for the current state of the economy and the workforce onto convenient, young, financially paralyzed scapegoats.

Excellent point as well. “Multi-generational homes” sounds so innocuous (and wholesome) if you don’t think about what it means. It means baby boomers are being stripped of their retirement benefits and pooling resources with their equally finanialicaly unstable adult kids just to scrape by. I means that, to use my own family as an example, my brother having to move back home twice in the span of a few years before he could find a job that left him remotely stable. It means me living at home until I’m almost 30 just so I can move out with an ex boyfriend and share rent because he’s the only person I trust to do that with and vice versa.

Everyone is getting fucked over by this, but when it comes to finding a scapegoat it’s usually us, because we’re the critical mass generation to to speak, the terminal one. The generation where everyone responsible for this mess realized there was no turning back, and needed a demographic to point fingers at.

My father is a postal worker and at least twice a week he comes home more cynical and more disillusioned about what used to be a perfectly secure retirement. It’s scary to think that he might, in fact, never be able to retire.

One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation..

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.
Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.

Although the other man could not hear the band - he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days, weeks and months passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.
He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed.

It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, ‘Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.’

Epilogue:

There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations.
Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled.

But Castiel wasn’t being controlled by Naomi when he left Dean this last time and that’s what Dean is referring to. None of their history matters compared to this - because if we’re going there, Castiel’s past record isn’t spotless either. But that isn’t what this scene in ‘Clip Show’ was about. It’s not a rejection of Castiel’s apology based off a conclusion about the summary of their entire relationship…. It is only a reaction their most recent encounter. It’s a ‘hey you hurt me’ and ‘no that’s not okay.’

After what was a very raw intense moment, where Dean was completely emotionally vulnerable with Castiel- the “I need you” and the supposedly cut “I love you” - Cas just up and left.

Yes, good Dean. This is what we’ve been wanting. Dean has been saying it all season long, starting in Purgatory ” I’m not leaving here without you” but now we get to see Dean really means it.

He stays with Castiel in the crypt, even if it means getting smote… smitten? Anyway, to me, this display of devotion was so powerful it pretty much makes up for any other times he’s done Cas wrong. Dean lays himself out for Cas in this scene. IMO Dean should have done something like this back in season 6, so for me this is finally resolving things that haven’t been okay since season 6.

But then there was no aftercare for Dean. Castiel should have stuck around and provided it. After being that exposed like Dean was…. anyone would need reassurance so they don’t feel be confused, rejected, worthless, abandoned… (And these are already issues that Dean specifically struggles with)

So sure, Castiel healed Dean… but he still left him banged up and split open. It’s often not about the physical as much as it emotional and mental health after something like that.

Cas left. He didn’t leave a way for Dean to contact him. In a way he practically rejected Dean’s “I need you.” Or at least, that’s how it felt to Dean.

Yes, Castiel sacrifices for Dean. Dean also sacrifices for Cas. (Dean’s just had less of an opportunity to until recently) Sometimes they both say thing they don’t mean and bicker, or even treat each other badly, because neither of them is perfect. But in this last particular instance Castiel was the one who messed up.
